Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting the Canada Beer Cup judging at Blackburn Brewery in the picturesque setting of Niagara Falls. With the majestic falls as our backdrop, thirty-three passionate judges hailing from around the globe gathered to evaluate an astounding 1,200 craft beer entries from more than 250 breweries across Canada. The atmosphere was nothing short of jubilant as we came together to celebrate the finest in Canadian craft brewing.

The Canada Beer Cup stands as a testament to our commitment to promoting the craft beer industry in Canada and beyond. It’s not merely a competition; it’s an expression of the dedication, creativity, and innovation of Canadian craft brewers. But our mission goes beyond celebration; it’s about making a meaningful impact on the industry that we all hold dear.

This competition goes a long way in supporting our federal advocacy efforts in Ottawa, a place where decisions that affect the craft beer industry are made. The funds raised from the Canada Beer Cup play a crucial role in advancing our cause. Here are some of the key areas we’re focusing on:

  1. Modernizing Federal Excise Tax Structure: We’re working to update the MNP economic impact study to strengthen our case for a modernized federal excise tax structure. This redesign aims to save Canada’s smaller craft breweries more money, providing a longer runway, and allowing them to thrive and grow.
  2. Safe and Reasonable Low Risk Drinking Guidelines: Our advocacy efforts also involve ensuring misinformation is not spread, and that the guidelines for low-risk drinking are safe and reasonable, striking the right balance between enjoyment and responsibility.
  3. Fair Labeling and Traceability Requirements: We are advocating for fair labeling and traceability requirements to ensure that consumers have access to accurate information about the craft beers they enjoy.
  4. CEBA Loan Relief: We’re dedicated to supporting craft brewers by advocating for loan relief through the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) to help them navigate challenging times.

Also, $2 from every Canada Beer Cup entry will support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts within the craft beer industry. This initiative reflects our commitment to making our industry a more inclusive and diverse space for everyone.

We invite you to join in the celebrations on October 25 at 7:00pm eastern when we unveil the winners in each category, as well as the coveted grand prize – The Cup. You can be a part of this exciting event in person at the Canada Beer Cup awards presentation, held as part of the Ontario Craft Brewers Conference in Niagara Falls, or by hosting or joining a Hops Connect sponsored livestream event party in your taproom or brewery. Let’s come together to raise our glasses and salute the passion, craftsmanship, and innovation that define Canadian craft brewing.

The Canada Beer Cup is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of the spirit and dedication of our craft beer community. We thank each and every one of you who entered the competition, those who judged the entries, our volunteers who helped sort and pour, and our dear sponsors who support our competition and the prosperity of the craft beer industry.

Together, you have all played a part in making the Canada Beer Cup 2023 awards a reality, and we look forward to sharing a toast with you all.

Sincerely,

Christine Comeau
